Heavy rain accompanied by strong gale lashed the Srivaikuntam region on Monday afternoon, causing an extensive damage. In just over 30 minutes, more than 1,000 banana plantations were uprooted.

The gale hit Srivaikuntam and surrounding areas around midday, with intense winds and thunder. In particular, Pudhukudi and Vellur regions witnessed severe damage as banana plantations were uprooted.

An Indian Rosewood tree near the railway station road was uprooted and fell across the road, completely blocking the traffic. Following the orders of Srivaikuntam Tahsildar Rathnasankar, revenue department staff, municipality workers and Tangedco officials launched a relief operation.

Similarly, many trees were uprooted along the Pudhukudi-Vellur road, damaging several electric poles in the region. Framers from the affected region have demanded proper compensation for the damaged banana plantations.
