San Francisco: A major catastrophic incident was averted at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) when a United Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8, flight UA1111, narrowly avoided a serious runway incursion. According to reports, the quick thinking of the pilots saved lives and highlighted urgent concerns in air traffic safety at one of America’s busiest airports.
As per reports, the incident occurred during routine taxi operations when Flight UA1111 received taxi instructions directing them to cross both runways 1L and 1R via Taxiway F. Unknown to the pilots, another aircraft was cleared for takeoff on runway 1R, setting the stage for a massive disaster. However, the pilots of Flight UA1111 sensed something was wrong and held short of runway 1R, refusing to cross until the situation was clarified. The pilot’s split-second decision likely saved hundreds of lives.
Reports also suggested that at the time of the incident, only one air traffic controller was juggling an overwhelming workload, tasked with managing takeoff clearances, coordinating landings, and instructing taxi routes across a web of intersecting runways. The officials claimed that the overextension likely contributed to the lapse in accurately monitoring pilot readbacks.
Notably, SFO’s runway layout frequently requires aircraft to cross active runways, a risk compounded by heavy traffic volumes.
San Francisco International Airport uses Runway Status Lights (RWSL), an automated visual warning system that alerts pilots when runways are active. Despite its presence, the human element in air traffic control remains vulnerable. The foreign media reports claimed that fatigue, high tempo, and outdated voice-based communication protocols remain critical safety concerns.
The airline officials asserted that the United crew’s professionalism in questioning an unsafe instruction, without confrontation, likely prevented a serious accident.
Unlike some of the US airports, SFO has authorisation to issue multiple runway crossing clearances at once, which helps manage high traffic volumes but also elevates the margin for error. The risk becomes even more pronounced when staffing is tight or communication falters.
