The Nelamangala police have arrested a 25-year-old woman who allegedly killed her newborn by drowning it in a cauldron used to boil water in the wee hours of Sunday (July 6, 2025).
The accused, Radha, was married to Pawan, an auto rickshaw driver, two years ago and had delivered a baby boy one-and-a-half months ago. She was staying at her parent’s house after her delivery.
Police suspect that the accused was suffering from post-partum depression, and was upset that Pawan had stopped visiting her. She was also troubled for the last few days as the child was crying inconsolably, and she was unable to feed him, the police said.
She reportedly picked up the baby, drowned it in a large cauldron (hande) and returned to sleep. The incident came to light on July 7 (Monday) morning when her parents noticed the baby missing and questioned her. Radha reportedly claimed that some unknown person had come in the middle of the night and taken away the baby, following which the parents alerted the police.
The parents later searched the house to find the baby in the cauldron. The police rushed to the spot and questioned Radha. A detailed interrogation led her to confess to the crime, police said.
Based on her confession, the police arrested Radha charging her under section 103 (murder) for further investigation.
