A 60-year-old resident of Balkampet, SR Nagar, was duped of ₹4.2 lakh in an online payment fraud after he was tricked by a cyber fraudster impersonating a PhonePe customer support executive.
The scam unfolded on July 3, when the victim, while searching for PhonePe’s customer care number on Google, received a phone call from an individual who claimed to be from the digital payment platform’s support team. During the call, the fraudster instructed the man to open his PhonePe application and misled him into sharing confidential banking information under the guise of technical assistance and verification.
Believing the caller to be genuine, the victim provided the requested details. Soon after, multiple unauthorised transactions were carried out from his various bank accounts, resulting in a financial loss of ₹4.2 lakh.
Realising he had been duped, the man immediately reported the matter to the National Cybercrime helpline (1930) and subsequently approached the cybercrime police to lodge a formal complaint.
A case was booked and an investigation is underway.
