The residents of Balehonnur in N.R. Pura taluk of Chikkamagaluru district in Karnataka observed a brandh on July 28, condemning the deaths due to elephant attacks. Two persons died in elephant attacks in the taluk in the last four days.

A farmer died in an elephant attack near Balehonnur on July 27 evening. A lady died at Bannur near Balehonnur on July 23. The incidents prompted the local people to call for a bandh.
Shops, business establishments and education institutions remained closed. People are demanding a permanent solution to the elephant menace.
The planters’ association have supported the bandh call. Movement of vehicles has been impacted.
Meanwhile, the Forest Department launched an operation to capture trouble-causing elephants in the region.
