A 50-year-old farmer was arrested by Kalambur police near Arani town in Tiruvannamalai on Wednesday for allegedly killing his lover.

Police said the arrested person was identified as S. Ramasamy, a tribal from Kallathur hamlet in Jamunamarathur village in Jawadhu Hills. He was unmarried and involved in farming in the village. The victim K. Deepa 39, also belongs to the same village.

Initial inquiry revealed that Ramasamy got acquainted with Deepa, who was living separately from her husband Kuppan. Deepa was a farm worker and used to work in Ramasamy’s paddy farm regularly.

Deepa stayed in her father Govindasamy’s house in the village. She used to go for farm work in nearby villages in the hills. In recent months, Ramasamy evaded proposal to marry Deepa and the duo had frequent quarrels over it. Police said Ramasamy took Deepa to Etthiyavadi Reserve Forest (RF) near Arani town in May where he strangled her. He buried her body in the forests and returned to his village.

As his daughter had not returned home, Govindasamy filed a complaint with Tiruvannamalai SP M. Sudhakar. Subsequently, special teams were formed. During investigation, police found that Ramasamy was close to Deepa. They interrogated him where he told police that he killed her. A case was registered. Body was sent to Government Medical College Hospital in Tiruvannamalai town. A probe is underway.
