A group of residents from Paappaiahpuram under Paalaamadai village panchayat near here submitted a petition to District Collector R. Sukumar on Monday protesting the alleged move to encroach upon the land reportedly belonging to Adi Dravida Education Welfare Society.
In the petition submitted, they said their ancestors, who created Adi Dravida Education Welfare Society in 1937, owns a “patta land” in the village. When a group of people belonging to a ‘dominant caste’ tried to encroach upon the land, a dispute erupted between the two castes. Subsequently, the land was surveyed properly by the government surveyor of revenue department and the boundaries were marked by installing concrete pillars on the four corners of the land.
However, the concrete pillars were damaged by a few recently with the ulterior motive of illegally occupying the land and tried to erect fence around the property.
“When we filed a complaint with the Seevalaperi police, the police refused to receive the petition saying that the Block Development Officer had given permission to Paalaamadai village panchayat president for constructing a public utility building on the land. Moreover, steps have been taken to erect fence around the land. Hence, the Collector should inspect the spot to save the land from being illegally occupied by the oppressors,” the petitioners said.
Heavy vehicles
In his petition, district secretary of Hindu Munnani N. Manikanda Mahadevan said the operation of heavy vehicles via ‘Katchi Mandapam’ in Tirunelveli Town had been banned considering safety of the decades-old ‘mandapam’, which was hit accidentally by the heavy vehicles in the past. With the contributions from the devotees, the damaged ‘mandapam’ was renovated.
However, the recently held meeting with District Collector in chair reportedly discussed lifting this ban to allow the heavy vehicles via ‘Katchi Mandapam’ following a plea from the traffic department.
Since the South Mount Road is being used now by the heavy vehicles proceeding towards Cheranmahadevi and Tenkasi to avoid heavy vehicles’ movement via ‘Katchi Mandapam’, this system should be continued while the bikes may be allowed as being done now, the petitioner said.
Palayamkottai ward 5 secretary of Thamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam Madhava Pandian submitted a petition seeking draining of stagnant rainwater in the playground in ward 5 of Tirunelveli Corporation.
Since the rainwater is stagnating in the playground due to lack of drainage channel in this area, the Corporation should be instructed to provide a drainage channel for running out the rainwater, he said.
Re-lay roads
In a petition submitted by a group of people from Ramaiyanpatti, the streets in ward 4 was dug for laying the drinking water pipelines two months ago. Even though the work was completed long back, the roads along five streets of ward 4 are yet to be re-laid. Hence, the damaged roads should be repaired and re-laid considering the safety of the public, the petitioners said.
