The Tiruchi Corporation will carry out a drive to delete the names of the dead persons from the list of street vendors before holding elections to the Town Vending Committee.
The civic body has taken steps as per the order of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on March 7. The drive will commence on Wednesday and culminate on March 26. To facilitate street vendors to check their names, the voters’ list has been put up in the offices of the corporation ward committees. The officials will check and cross check the voters list to verify whether the names of deceased persons were figured in the list.
In a statement, the Corporation on Tuesday said that anyone or street vendors who had information about the names of dead persons, if any, in the voters list, could be brought to the notice of the Assistant Commissioners or relevant officials with valid documents. The street vendors could get needed information from the officials about the voters list. The officials would dispose the petitions by taking action.
The Corporation had notified that polling to elect members of the committee would be held on November 22. It proposed to give representations for the categories of Scheduled Castes, women, persons with disabilities, minorities, backward classes, and others. Election was to be held as mandated under the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014, and Tamil Nadu Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Rules, 2015.
However, elections to the town vending committee were deferred following an interim injunction granted by the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court based on a petition filed by the street vendors.
