Baghdad: After the US airstrikes on Iran’s Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan nuclear facilities, Islamic nations have been drawing attention toward the deteriorating peace and stability in the region. In its official statement, the government of Iraq condemned the targeting of nuclear facilities within Iran’s territory . “The Iraqi government condemns the targeting of nuclear facilities within the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran, affirming that this military escalation constitutes a serious threat to peace and security in the Middle East and poses grave risks to regional stability,” wrote the government on X.
Reaffirming its principle support for sovereignty of states and the protection of their vital infrastructure, particularly facilities under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the government firmly rejected the use of force in international relations, which is the current case between Iran and Israel after Israel launched a surprise attack on Iran on June 13. The situation was further worsened early Sunday, when US also intervened and attacked nuclear locations withing Iran, with B-2 bombers.
Urging the nations to resort to dialogue and diplomacy to safeguard regional peace, the Iraqi government further said, “Military action can never serve as a substitute for dialogue and diplomacy. The continuation of such attacks risks dangerous escalation with consequences that extend beyond the borders of any single state, threatening the security of the entire region and the world.”
The statement ended with a call for immediate de-escalation and the urgent opening of diplomatic channels to contain the situation and defuse the crisis. “This must be done in a manner that safeguards collective security and upholds the principles of international law and the Charter of the United Nations,” wrote the Iraqi government.
