Gigawatts of energy are needed to power millions of GPUs to train larger AI. XAI is getting 2 gigawatts of power years faster than any other AI company.
Elon has confirmed that xAI has bought a power plant and is shipping it from overseas because they can’t get a new one in time here in the U.S.
S.E. Robinson reports that XAI is moving a Natural Gas Power Plant in Southaven and a Solar Plant in Boxtown.
Block 1 is Colossus 2, and the open area next to it will be the massive Tesla Megapack site and Chiller Plant.
Further south in Block 2 is a former Duke Energy natural gas plant and where xAI will build a state-of-the-art Compressed NatGas power plant. Workers have already been spotted on-site, and there are staging yards in the surrounding areas. We do not know the supplier or where it is coming from or the type of CNG plant.
Block 3 is Colossus 1. It already has 216 Megapacks on site. Maybe more since the last time I was able to count. Directly north of the data center is where xAI will build the worlds most technologically advanced Gray Water Plant so they do not have to use the Memphis Sand Aquifer and pump clean water into the Mississippi River.
Block 4 is the 522 acres of the Frank C. Pidgeon Industrial Park that EDGE Memphis leased to xAI in October of 2024. This area will hold a Solar Plant.
Natural Gas Power Plant in SouthavenLocation: Southaven, near Memphis, Tennessee.
Details: This facility is identified as a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) power plant, replacing or upgrading a former Duke Energy natural gas plant in Block 2.
Construction activity is evident, with workers already spotted on-site and staging yards established in the surrounding areas, indicating that the project is actively progressing.
It is a state-of-the-art facility designed to meet the significant power demands of XAI’s operations.
xAI UPDATE: So, I was up all night, and this is what I was able to piece together on a NatGas Power Plant in Southaven and a Solar Plant in Boxtown.
